Τhe goats that graze on the Kardak islets four miles off the coast of Turkey used to enjoy peace and solitude. Now they are often startled by human activity and even gunfire.

Low-flying fighter jets roar by, frigates make threatening circles around the coastline, and the goats that are sole custodians of the uninhabited islets are occasionally joined by men in uniform.
